Celebration of Excellence… and Schewe!

Last Friday, April 25th, Illinois College hosted its 4th annual Celebration of Excellence.  The celebration highlighted the outstanding work which IC students and faculty produced over the last academic year.  Schewe Library hosted a number of talks throughout the day, and each was filled to capacity.  It’s events like these that really bring out the spirit of the College!

Though Schewe extends its congratulations to all students and faculty in the celebration, we’re particularly proud of two of our student workers — Sovit Chalise and Kelly McCormick — who were inducted into the prestigious Phi Beta Kappa Society.  For those unaware, Phi Beta Kappa is an honors society which admits only the brightest and most accomplished science & liberal arts students into its ranks.  It is also the oldest such society in the United States.  A piece of Library trivia: our own Reference Librarian/Associate Professor, Mike Westbrook, was once nominated for induction into the society; the nomination, however, was subsequently withdrawn.  Could it be that Mike’s unimpeachable character, was, in fact, impeachable??? Mike remains impishly silent on the issue… 🙂

Cutting Edge @ Schewe

On Thursday, April 24th, at 7:00Pm, Schewe Library will host the inaugural meeting of Cutting Edge, one of IC’s newest student groups!  Under the directorship of Ashley Brown, Cutting Edge is a group which will help IC students (and faculty) with their presentations and presentation skills.  Along with the Writing Center (which helps students with their writing) and the Speech Communication Center (which helps students with their speech), Cutting Edge will provide a unique and timely service for IC students.  And, better yet, with the Library offering up its Digital Learning Center for Cutting Edge meetings, you’ll get the best teachers and the best equipment.

“Great,” you say, “I’ll hit them up when I need to finish off my presentation.”  And so you should, but also don’t forget to stop by this Thursday, because the group will be pulling out all the stops with a Mario Kart tournament, 15 lbs of free wings, gift certificates, and a variety of other fantastic prizes!

You’ll find Cutting Edge in Schewe Library, room 210.  Hope to see you there.

Update: 25/04/204: The night was a rousing success, with a boatload of participants and some darned good Mario Kart players!

Congrats to Our Undergraduate Writers!

Last night, Lincoln Hall hosted the 17th annual Illinois College Undergraduate Conference of Writers (ICUCOW).  With 10 of IC’s best young writers presenting, we were treated to 14 provocative, thoughtful, eloquent, and outright dangerous pieces.  It takes a lot of courage to write, and double that to present, so the Schewe staff would like to extend their heartfelt congratulations to each and every one of the evening’s participants.  You can have a look at the program here:

As if that weren’t enough, we were treated to yet another pleasant surprise by evening’s end: the establishment of a new IC undergraduate journal, ICWrites!  ICWrites is an interdisciplinary publication, and will accept a variety of student writing (including papers, essays, reviews, and creative works).  We at the Library can’t wait to read its inaugural issue, and wish General Editor Dr. Cynthia Cochran all the best in what is sure to be a wild ride.  You can find ICWrites here:
